Navigating Dress Codes

Understanding wedding dress codes is like having a secret key to the perfect outfit for celebrating love and joy with friends and family. Dress codes, though sometimes misunderstood, are not as daunting as they may seem. Semi-formal may mean one thing to you and something different to a friend, but with our guidance, you'll be well-prepared. Stay with us for a comprehensive guide on wedding dress codes, empowering you to dress appropriately and confidently for any wedding.

Black-tie weddings are the peak of formality. Traditionally, black-tie attire is reserved for evening weddings. For men, this means a tuxedo, Oxford dress shoes, bow ties, and maybe a waistcoat. Ladies, you get to dress to the nines: evening gowns, statement jewelry, a small clutch, dress heels, and full-glam makeup. This is the evening to put maximum effort into appearance, and it can be done from your closet without breaking the bank.

Our next dress code is formal. Formal wear is one step down from a black tie and is typically characterized by a suit and tie for men and a knee-length or midi dress for women. Dress elegantly and comfortably. This is the opportunity to dress up without being super flashy. Traditionally, the suit is navy or black; in a semi-formal dress code, more color can be applied. You can also opt to wear a suit jacket and khakis in semi-formal attire, but be sure to keep the tie and dress shoes. Ladies, maxi or midi dresses are going to be your best friend! Try sticking with classy, solid colors, but some patterns are okay here. Classy heels or dress flats are more than appropriate and feel comfortable adding accessories to your outfit. Mountain weddings can be chilly and have changing weather, so bring a light shawl or cardigan. Semi-formal wear is similar to formal wear, but you can wear a cocktail or knee-length dress. Mix up the colors and patterns in a semi-formal dress code.

Cocktail Attire is a step above casual. You can wear a sport coat and khakis with an open collar. Dress shoes are a must, but they do not have to be your Oxfords or finest leather. Feel free to dabble in coat colors other than navy or black. Ladies, dresses that hit just above the knee or cocktail dresses are your best friend. Sandals, strappy heels, or pumps are great shoes in this dress code. Solid colors are safe, but you can play with colors and patterns. This is a great time to play with the Pantone color of the year: peach fuzz. You can even play with the floral trend that is raging in 2024.

A casual dress code does not traditionally mean jeans and a T-shirt. Casual Dress is a button-down shirt with your best dress pants. Linen shirts are also a great option for a casual wedding and are trending for men. A light blazer or a sport coat is also great for casual weddings as an outer layer in case the weather changes. At The Twickenham House and Hall, we always recommend bringing an outer layer because mountain weather tends to change. This also enhances your style without being too formal. Ladies! Sundresses or casual dresses are your best friend. Think cotton or linen because the fabric is lightweight and breathable. Cocktail, knee-length, or midi-length dresses are great for casual weddings. Sandals, wedges, or casual flats are good shoe options. These are comfortable for walking and dancing. In terms of accessories, stick to your everyday jewelry and keep it minimal. Stay true to yourself.
